Bum life: My first week with Boise Urban Magazine

“BUM life” is a weekly blog following the everyday tasks and experiences of Boise Urban Magazine marketing, photo and journalism interns. Aspects of marketing, photography and journalism are highlighted each week to demonstrate the learning process and growth of being an intern in today’s market.

My first week at Boise Urban has been quite the whirlwind of excitement! I fully believe in the mission of Boise Urban Magazine, which is to improve the livelihood of Boise through interactive journalistic experiences.

First impressions mean everything, and BUM has made a really great one for me. I have learned so much in the one week that I have been a marketing intern here. Owner/Editor-in-Chief Tabitha Bower and Owner/Creative Director Bryan Talbot are two people who have instantly shown me that no dream is too big to achieve. I am thankful for the opportunity to put what I have learned during my time at the University of Idaho into action.

Entrepreneurship in journalism media is as gutsy as it is fun, who doesn’t like being called the boss?

Boise Urban prides itself on delivering Boise an unbiased, enjoyable and interactive journalistic experience. At Boise Urban the point is not to sell you on a certain idea, it is rather to present what the Treasure Valley has to offer and focus on issues important to its citizens. We believe in journalism that gets readers engaged.

I imagine Boise Urban being an influential opportunity that will provide me with real-world media relations practice.

The big realization I’ve had after learning my role here is how pleased I am with choosing this field as my future profession. Working to promote something you personally support is fun and I enjoy interacting with different people day-to-day.

The nitty gritty of what I do.

As a marketing intern I am working to promote BUM through social media by using information collected through analytics and developing the best marketing strategies. I am currently creating the content posted on three media platforms two days a week.

I also assist in editing editing social media content to best represent Boise Urban to our consumers. Our social media is scheduled and strategically planned on Hootsuite, which is quickly becoming my favorite website. So helpful! Be sure to check it out if you consistently manage multiple media accounts.

Along with social media I will work on advertising sponsorships and sales outreach by contacting and meeting with different local businesses, restaurants, etc. I will also write blogs every now and then, which allow others to read about my experience and what I am learning through this internship.

Other intern responsibilities include three overarching campaigns that will focus on increasing the amount of subscribers and interested advertisers. One campaign will be researching and improving social media engagement, the other will be marketing the magazine and getting the word out to the public and the last will focus on gaining and maintaining advertisement clients.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of the #BumLife and I am anxious to see how this summer with Boise Urban will effect me as an aspiring media professional.”

Bryan and Tabitha, thank you again for this experience!
